Warmth and sunshine — a welcome respite from the dreary weather of the past few weeks on campus — marked the 10th annual Big Parade and Festival on Saturday, May 7. Preparation began early in the morning for the town-wide event, which, in addition to the parade, included music, free food, a moonbounce and other family-friendly activities.

Student Organization of the Week: Harry Potter Alliance

The Harry Potter Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that uses lessons from J.K. Rowling’s best-selling series as inspiration for tackling issues such as literacy, equality and human rights. Oberlin College has its own chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance, founded last year by College sophomore Anna Dardick.

Ninde Scholars Program Aids in College Prep

In 2002, Oberlin residents Dick and Ann Ninde offered a challenge grant toward the goal of making it possible for all Oberlin High School students to attend college. With the help of other community members and the College, the Ninde Scholars Program was founded in 2003 as a collaboration between the College, Oberlin City Schools and the Lorain County Urban League. The Scholars Program aims to honor the Nindes’ commitment to education by offering tutoring and college preparation services. The program has grown greatly in the 8 years since its creation.

Peace-Seeking Organization Screens Documentary

On Wednesday, March 30, the group Invisible Children hosted a screening of its latest documentary, Tony, as part of its Congo Tour. The screening will fund the group’s efforts to protect and rehabilitate the victims of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a sectarian religious military group founded 25 years ago in Uganda. The documentary, which spans the eight years of Invisible Children’s existence, tells the story of the boy who served as the inspiration for the organization and the friendship he developed with the founders.

Oberlin Continues to Produce Peace Corps Volunteers

For the eleventh consecutive year, Oberlin College has been named as one of the top small colleges and universities to produce Peace Corps volunteers. The list ranks the College as No. 18 in this year’s ranking, with 17 alumni currently serving as volunteers as of September 2010.

In her convocation speech on Thursday, Nov. 11, Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator under President Bush, discussed the environmental and energy-related problems our country faces today. Both Republicans and Democrats for her work on environmental policy, and President Krislov described her in his introduction, as a politician who is willing “to find common ground” between allies and opponents alike.
